Full Salary Range: The full salary range for this position is $66,431.27 - $106,830.32/yr. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience; the budget for the position; and the application of fair, equitable, and consistent pay practices at the University.

Work Location: Coal Oil Point Reserve

Working Days and Hours: M-F with occasional weekends. Mornings preferred. Exact hours TBD.

The UC Santa Barbara NRS (https://nrs.ucsb.edue) campus manages seven of the 41 reserves in the UC NRS. The Valentine Eastern Sierra Reserves (VESR; https://vesr.nrs.ucsb.edu) consists of two separate reserves, Valentine Camp and the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL), located approximately eight miles apart. They are situated in Mono County on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada, near the town of Mammoth Lakes, CA. VESR became part of the University of California Natural Reserve System (UCNRS) in 1973 and is administered through the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). VESR provides protected wildlands, on-site experimental facilities, as well as the support facilities for conducting studies of natural systems over a large part of central, eastern California and western Nevada.

Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general supervision of the Coal Oil Point Reserve Director and the Resource manager, the Restoration Coordinator is involved in all aspects of the implementation of restoration projects at the reserve. The priority responsibilities for the next two years include preparing a restoration plan and successfully completing the restoration for a project supported by a National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) grant to repair damages caused by the Ellwood Marine Terminal (EMT) removal project. The Restoration Coordinator is also for other routine restoration activities in the reserve including mowing around trails, monitoring and removing noxious weeds, and developing restoration and plant conservation priorities in coordination with the reserve director.

Job tasks include studying the habitat to be restored, developing species lists for propagation that suit the habitats, propagation at the reserve's nursery, site preparation, exotic weed control, planting, and restoration maintenance to achieve high success of plant survival. The restoration coordinator works with the reserve director and supervises student interns who help with the implementation of projects. The restoration coordinator sets weekly restoration goals and priorities, and develops a calendar of activities for timely seed collection, propagation, planting, and weeding. The Restoration coordinator maintains the restoration greenhouse, shed, and tools in good working condition and orders and maintains the necessary supplies for restoration such as potting soil, manure, pots, etc.

Other duties include education/outreach, implementation of regular monitoring, management of purchasing budget, oversight and implementation of the reserve's restoration plan, and coordination with other campus departments regarding joint management issues. Monitoring responsibilities will include assisting the Resource Manager when needed for the reserve's monitoring programs such as, wildlife and hydrology. The restoration coordinator keeps records on the number of plants propagated and planted, locations, dates, and other general notes. Education and outreach duties include assisting researchers with locating and identifying plants, giving tours, and summarizing the achievements of the restoration program quarterly. Additional duties include collaborating with other reserve staff as needed. The restoration coordinator is knowledgeable about the reserve's goals and mission and the reserve's native plants and restoration goals.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related field or 4 years experience in restoration ecology.
  • 4-6 years experience in restoration work
  • 4-6 years essential knowledge of Coal Oil Point Reserve's plant species, restoration planning and methods of propagation of native species.
  • 4-6 years knowledge of local ecological restoration including the ability to identify most native species in the field.
  • 4-6 years experience in weed eradication methods. Herbicide Applicator's License required.
  • 4-6 years experience with the local wetland and coastal scrub ecosystems to create a restoration plan compatible with Coal Oil Point Reserve's natural systems.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

Management and Maintenance (65%): Restoration Coordinator uses specialized botanical and ecological restoration principles to plan all aspects of restoration including the schedule of activities, and the Restoration Coordinator uses specialized botanical and ecological restoration principles to plan all aspects of restoration including the schedule of activities, and the plant species number and distribution for each project. Is responsible for executing restoration projects in the field according to the COPR restoration Plan. Uses broad range of restoration skills for Santa Barbara native plant propagation, weed eradication, planting, irrigation, and erosion control. Oversees equipment maintenance and safety procedures. Maintains up-to-date license in herbicide application and safely executes herbicide application. Oversees site management including protecting and enhancing rare plants and habitats, delineating and implementing invasive species management, site enhancement through planting and irrigation as necessary, evaluation and maintenance of trails. Maintains shed, and all infrastructure used in restoration activities.

Plant Propagation (15%): Plans and oversees all aspects of native plant propagation efforts at the restoration nursery and greenhouse including seed collection, seedling germination, soil mixing, transplanting, organization, and general greenhouse maintenance.

Ecological Monitoring (15%): With understanding of ecological field methods, assists the resource manager with monitoring, data entry, management and analysis of ongoing vegetation, wildlife, hydrology, rare plant monitoring. Produces reports as needed. Use GIS to map and record weeds, restored areas, etc. Maintains detailed records of the number and location of each species planted. Prepares progress reports for the agencies funding the projects.

Education and Outreach (5%): Restoration Coordinator supervises and trains restoration assistants, interns and volunteers and documents their work. With specialized local botanical knowledge, leads field trips for classes, and provides tours and lectures to courses when requested. Participates in COPR educational programs and supports COPR's mission of research, education and stewardship. Attends weekly staff meetings and public outreach events. Participates in other duties as assigned.
